Water Heater Pilot Won't Stay Lit

Sometimes your water heater pilot light won’t stay lit no matter what you do.

If you follow these simple steps and still have issues maybe its a bit more than just the pilot light.

1. Turn the thermostat dial (Dial on the front) back to zero

2. Turn the pilot dial (Dial on the top) to the pilot setting

3. Press and hold the pilot button down for at least 30 seconds to purge through gas

4. Click the piezo igniter a few times

5. Keep holding down the pilot button for a further 60 seconds to heat up the thermocouple to energize the electromagnet so the electromagnet can hold open the gas valve

6. Release the pilot button and turn it to the burner setting

7. Turn the thermostat dial up to desired temperature (Dial on the front)

Thermostat – Thermocouple – Temperature Pressure Relief Valve (TPR) – Tempering Valve


The gas inlet connects to the thermostat gas control valve, which then, as the name implies, controls the flow of gas to the unit. The gas control valve allows the pilot to be ignited, and the lit pilot heats the thermocouple.


Thermocouple is a sensor used to measure temperature. Thermocouples consist of two wire legs made from different metals. The wires legs are welded together at one end, creating a junction. This junction is where the temperature is measured. When the junction experiences a change in temperature, a voltage is created.

Temperature Pressure Relief Valve (TPR)

temperature pressure relief valve is a valve that’s located somewhere near the top of your water heater. The valve has a lever that can be lifted up or down and a discharge pipe that runs from the valve straight down to the bottom of your water heater.

tempering valve is an adjustable 2-inlet mixing valve that is temperature activated and used to moderate a hot water flow by mixing the hot water with cold water to achieve ≅50°C. This reduced temperature water is then delivered to the taps and shower heads around your home
